Today, I say goodbye to an old friend

Yes, I have sold my 944.

It served me well. It taught me how to drive stick. It taught me car control in a rear drive beast. It taught me how to drift, albeit unintentionally. It taught me that slow car fast is AWESOME. It taught me that the Germans are geniuses. It taught me that flared wheel arches are sexy and pop up headlights will never NOT be cool.

It took me from Nashville to Charlotte, across Deal's Gap and back with a dodgy electrical system. It got me back over the Smoky Mountains in 3-inches of snow that had been laid the night before due to a freak hurricane in late October. It somehow survived the trip despite being on summer tires and consequently, sideways or backwards most of the way.

It was my steed for a father son road trip from Tennessee to the Rocky Mountains that I will not soon forget. It braved the summer heat of the Great Plains with no air conditioner. It climbed Pike's Peak. It traversed the Rocky Mountains. It survived a not-so-nice part of Denver we got lost in at night after a Rockies game. And it got us home.

This car was one of the best things I have ever bought. It taught me a lot. It gave me amazing memories. And it made me love Porsche.

I will buy another Porsche someday. And it will be a 911. I'm ready. And this 944 is the machine that made me ready.

I can only hope that the next owner—the steward to which I pass this wonderful beast on to—will treat it right. Track it at 10/10ths. Get sideways. Enjoy it.

I'm going to miss you, 944. But I will never forget you.

Because I also have a FiST. And I don't drive the 944 enough. It felt like neglect. I had to let it go just because I knew I wasn't treating it like it should be treated. And, by luck, I was found by someone whom I knew would treat it properly.

great looking car. i even prefer the pre-s2's and non-turbos because of those little bumperettes on the front. and phone dials. love the phone dials.

glad to hear it served you well. i'm sure she'll provide the same to her new owner. now you can start looking at carreras.

in your selling process, did you feel it was more of a seller's market or a buyer's market?

Makes sense... I have a vehicle or two that are definitely not being properly utilized (although neither it the a 944, which I think are wonderful automocars).

Oh goodness, the phone dials are probably the best looking wheels ever. When I get a 911, I'm probably going to get a set of phone dials to put on it.

And as for the selling process, I think it's a buyer's market. I had to come down on price a bit from where I started, but that's okay. There are a lot of 944s out there of varying type.

The FiST. HNNNGGHHHH. That is the best hot hatch on the market. Amazing in every way. And it definitely doesn't have the balance and handling the 944 does, but good lord, does it handle well in its own way.

Hmm, one of my coworkers has the FoST, and another the FoSE. I see the Ford hot hatches on the road quite frequently around here... All of these hot hatches really make me miss my civic hatch :(

there's a 4-5 year old thread on the 928 board at rennlist where some guys have been planning designing constructing a modern 18in (maybe 19?) phone dial. could be what you want if youre thinking 993 and newer.
